[Simply Computers] New Member with a Question

Hello everyone!

I just joined this group and I hope that you can help me. I have a Compaq CQ5600F that has an AMD Athlon II 170u processor in it and it's driving me crazy at how slow it is! Honestly, if I had known about the AMD processors, I would have never gotten this computer, but the price was right for me at the time. Anyways, I was seriously considering upgrading the processor. When I checked on the HP website, it says that the motherboard will only accommodate the following processors:
AMD Phenom II Quad Core
AMD Phenom II Triple Core
AMD Phenom Quad Core (A) 9xxx series (AM 2+)
AMD Phenom Triple Core (T) 8xxx series (AM 2+)
AMD Athlon X4
AMD Athlon X3
AMD Athlon X2 (B) (AM 2+)

I was wondering: which of these processors is considered the fastest? I use my computer for the usual: email, word processing, Facebook, etc., but I am a die-hard multitasker. I like (need) to have the radio playing and several programs (MS Word, Firefox, and Opera are my usual suspects to be open at the same time) open at the same time. Of course, the system I have now is woefully unable to do this. :(
I'm not sure if the motherboard can handle an Intel processor; the HP website said only AMD processors will work.
Which processor would you recommend? I am not able to replace the motherboard to switch to an Intel at the moment, but I really need to upgrade my computer as soon as possible.

My system is running Windows 7 Home and it has 2 GB RAM, the processor is 2.00 GHz. I hope that someone here can help me. I've been out of the loop with all the computer advances lately, so things that I'm finding online is just confusing me. lol

Thanks in advance!

Carolyn

You can also ask you internet service provider if they would recommend that router. Make sure you have a good firewall when you are using a wireless router.

Re: [Simply Computers] Transfer outlook files between computers not work

Hi Rick,

Thanks for not typing any cuss words that might be running through your mind right now ... we try to keep this Group "family friendly" :)

As Vincent mentioned, Microsoft changed the file format of Outlook somewhere along the way, and as you did not mention which versions you are using, it's possible that is one difficulty you are seeing.

Another problem is that you are NOT the owner of the original files under Windows 7, regardless of whether you are the Administrator or not. You need to "take Ownership".

You will need to copy the file onto your hard drive to do this. Then, in Windows 7, right click it and click Properties, then Security, then Advanced, then the Owner tab.

You'll see the Current Owner, and you should see your username in the Change Owner to box.

Change the Owner to your username and OK your way out. (If you don't see your username, click the Edit button)

As far as exporting your messages, I would not bother with that. Just find the .pst file and copy it to the new computer, change Ownership to you, then Import the messages.

let us know if it still does not work. We'll fix it.

Re: [Simply Computers] Did I kill my USB keyboard?

Hi Joan,

I did not respond to your original message because I was not sure I understood your lingo.

Re-reading it now, maybe "kicked it out passing by" means you tripped on the wire and pulled it out of the jack?

It's USB right? Pulling it out while the computer is running ( and plugging it back in) should not cause any harm, regardless of what operating system it is. (although I've never heard of Zorin Linux)

Also, not sure what "I tried an IBM model with no WinXP support for now, so at least the port is still good" means.

Does that mean you tried a IBM model keyboard? What does "no WinXP support" have to do with a keyboard?

The IBM worked, (right?) which is why you said "at least the port is still good."

So I'm still not sure what your question is.

You said your USB keyboard does not work, and you tried a different one, which did work, so you were planning to go buy a new keyboard/mouse combo.

As for which ones work well with a 4 port USB hub, I have no idea, so could not answer you on that.

In you latest message, you said the keyboard worked in another computer, so therefore the keyboard is OK.

You asked if it would work in a different USB port in the original computer, if you had one ... there's no way for us to know that. It should.

Apparently you don't have another USB port to try it in (in the original computer), so the question is moot.

As you've shown that the keyboard is good, when you plug the keyboard into the original computer, and it doesn't work, then you've somehow damaged the computer, not the keyboard.

Perhaps one of the internal pins in the USB jack is bent out of place? Again, we cannot tell from here.

Can you plug a PS/2 keyboard into the original computer? (you said something about PS/2, but I couldn't follow your thought). Does it work?

Do you have an expansion slot available where you could install a PCI to USB card?

Are there extra connectors on the motherboard for additional USB jacks?

[Simply Computers] Re: missing broad band;

Hi Bennie,

I see you sent your latest message by itself as a new message.
We prefer that you "Reply" to messages sent to you, so that the information in the former messages is included with the newer ones.

That way, everyone who is interested in the topic can follow along.

XP is not always good at renewing an IP address when you connect / disconnet the cables.

Go to one of the computers that is connected via wire, and is working properly, and open a Command Prompt window (its in Accessories)

In the command window type:

ipconfig

and press the Enter key on the keyboard.

You should see a list of numbers.

Look for Local Area Connection.

Right now, you need only be concerned with IP address and Default Gateway.

Write them down, then go to the computer that does not work and run the same ipconfig command.

The Default Gateway address should be exactly the same as the computer that does work, and the IP address should be similar. (the last digit will be different)

If the computer has the wrong Default Gateway address, type:

ipconfig /release

and hit Enter.

Wait for it to respond, then type:

ipconfig /renew

See if this brings up the correct Default Gateway address.

let us know

[Simply Computers] Recovering System on Acer 5200 notebook

Acer Notebook 5200 series, Vista Home Premium

I got a virus which has ruined my C:\ partition.

The manual says there is recovery partition but doesn't tell you how to
recover the system to the original factory setup.

Hope some expert can shed some light as to how.

Thanks in advance.

RE: [Simply Computers] Transfer outlook files between computers not work

You don't mention the version of Outlook you're using on W7 or what version
your transferring from. That might be important.

I have been a long-standing Outlook user since Outlook 97. Never once used
their tools to move pst files. In my own case I copy files across a SOHO
network. That said, you can copy the pst from one location to another using
flash drives. What I would do is place the new pst where you want it (e.g.,
I move the pst to a separate partition for ease of backup and location and
because if you copy / move your pst it likes to go to the same directory
wherever it's copied.)

When you open Outlook you'll have to instruct it where to find the new pst
once it's copied. If you adopt the default settings for 2010 they've moved
it to My Documents.

Unhide your files as the pst is hidden by default.

Once you get setup be sure and download the backup app for outlook. It's a
lifesaver.

http://bit.ly/suRTgD

You'll have to tweak the registry but it's an easy in-and-out of the
registry. Backup the registry first before doing anything to it.

On a cd / dvd the default is read-only despite whatever is checked or not.

Can't comment on problem one.

This is gonna be long. I'll try to hold my tongue so I don't go off swearing
too badly.

Once again, Microsoft's instructions are krap. I'm trying to transfer my
existing outlook .pst file from my XP to my Win 7. MS's instructions said to
use the export function in XP's outlook to create a backup which I can then
import on the Win 7. Tried that. The file on the XP in the applications
folder shows 43mg. The size of the export file I sent to a thumb drive is
69mg. That's problem one that I don't understand.
So, with thumb drive in hand, I went to the Win 7 machine. Went into Outlook
thereon. Did Outlook >file >Open >import. The dialog box among others, had a
line that said "import from another program (pst)". Clicked on that and got
messsge "Outlook data file (pst)is already in use in current profile." Ergo,
I can't import my backup. That's problem 2.
Next, another instruction said to copy the application file by name to a
backup CD. Did so. Couldn't open the backup file because the message was the
file could only be opened by Outlook. When I went to Outlook and tried to
open the pst backup on the CD, message said I didn't have access to the
file. Told me to find someone with access to it. BS. I am the administrator
on BOTH the XP and the W7. I can't get properties on the CD file to see if
it's read-only because properties isn't an option on the backup.pst file.
Once again, MS is OVER protecting everything to such an extent that I'll
never get the file transferred.

Any suggestion?
