[Simply Computers] Re: Want Gateway Colorbook service manual

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your input!

You might say I'm an electronic technition. I like to design and build
some
of my Ham Radio gadgets.....been doing that for quite awhile....
since I was a kid, actually.

Yes, those pubs were "Sam's Photofacts". I think they are
still around. But, no Sam's for the Gateway Colorbook!!! :D)

I still would like to repair the ol' computer and I have absolutely
nothing to lose (monetarily) by trying. It's probably something simple
to repair. Probably related to the power supply board. I
won't give up just yet!!

I did look on eBay, and someone there is trying sell a real junker
for a rediculous price. I won't even think about buying that!!

It would really help if I did have a schematic if nothing
else. So, if there's a Gateway tech out there who
might have access to that I'd really like to my hands on
that!!! (Model CB4DX475 aka "DX-4/75")

Best,
Charlie

Hi Charlie,

You sound like a long-time (I almost said "old") electronics technician.
Maybe you remember the days when you could buy schematics for stuff ...
what were they called? SamsFacts or something like that?

Charlie, those days are gone. Computer repair nowadays is a matter of
replacing parts, not following pc board traces.

As you said in your message, "it's DEAD" ... time to move on.

I also have a friend's dead laptop in the other room. HP wants $463 for a
new motherboard ... they are not available on eBay for that model.

No big deal, it belongs to his wife, and she wants a new Macbook Air for
Christmas. She will probably get an early Christmas present!

Ardell is our resident laptop specialist, so he may have a better
solution.

But I think it's time for a new one.

If you still want to work on it, go back to eBAy and see if anyone is
selling motherboards for it.

I can't guarantee that that is the problem, but you can weigh the cost of
such a purchase (plus the value of your time) against buying a new
computer.
