Hi Charlie,
You sound like a long-time (I almost said "old") electronics technician. Maybe you remember the days when you could buy schematics for stuff ... what were they called? SamsFacts or something like that?
Charlie, those days are gone. Computer repair nowadays is a matter of replacing parts, not following pc board traces.
As you said in your message, "it's DEAD" ... time to move on.
I also have a friend's dead laptop in the other room. HP wants $463 for a new motherboard ... they are not available on eBay for that model.
No big deal, it belongs to his wife, and she wants a new Macbook Air for Christmas. She will probably get an early Christmas present!
Ardell is our resident laptop specialist, so he may have a better solution.
But I think it's time for a new one.
If you still want to work on it, go back to eBAy and see if anyone is selling motherboards for it.
I can't guarantee that that is the problem, but you can weigh the cost of such a purchase (plus the value of your time) against buying a new computer.
