[Simply Computers] Re: DVD/CD Rom drive

I would not transfer the files to CDs ... if you need to run the installation again, a file that it needs may be on the other disk. The install won't know this, and will just fail.

If your computer can boot from a USB key, then you might try copying the install disk to a USB key that is large enough.

Then try running the install, just to be sure it works. (you don't have to complete it, just see if it starts and finds your hard drive.)

Or just purchase an external DVD drive that connects via USB.

I am using XP and, according to the Internet, XP automatically finds the drives. The drive itself lights up when it is opened so it is getting power but the computer can't read anything put in it. The drives look identical. I can't see why the old one is there but the new ones vanish. Anyone got a clue. Is there something I need to do to make the computer recognize the new drives? Failing that, is there a way I can transfer the DVD recovery drive data onto two CDs? The old drive will read and boot from a CD.
