[Simply Computers] Mac issue - says I am not the administrator when updating when I am when I check

Suddenly my Mac won't let me update software like Firefox. The error message says I don't have the authority to do that. What??? I am the administrator of the computer. I check the controls and I am still the administrator. I prevent kids from downloading anything in their log in area by requiring my login to do so.

I did have a kid from China here who surfed the web and used QQ so I am now getting chinese junk mail, popups, etc. (I have dumped all cookies and it is still coming).

I also used cnet to find a virus program to use to check for problems after the onslaught of chinese issues (installed this prior to the problem I am writing about so perhaps this caused it?). I installed that, checked and found nothing - although it screwed with adding an unwanted bar to safari which I removed, uninstalled that.

I can't think of anything else that has happened on this computer that would have allowed a bogus installation of something to lock me out of updating my software.

Is there any software out there I can run to see what the problem is or is this something I am stuck wiping the computer and reinstalling fresh installations of every piece of software on the computer? Other suggestions?

Thanks,
Carolyn
